Wednesday, October 22, 2008, four Birmingham Heart Clinic (BHC) cardiologists were recognized during a presentation at the BHC office location in Trussville when they were designated as a Center of Excellence in Excimer Laser Ablation Therapy. 

The designation comes from The Spectranetics Corporation, manufacturer of the only Excimer Laser approved in the United State, Europe and Japan for use in multiple, minimally invasive cardiovascular procedures. Birmingham Heart Clinic is only the second Center of Excellence designation for the Laser thus far in the United States. 

The Spectranetics Corporation acknowledged Birmingham Heart Clinic physicians as national leaders and a Center of Excellence for Coronary and Peripheral Laser Ablation therapy.  This technology treats complex cardiovascular conditions by vaporizing lipid-based, calcified and fibrotic plaque, saphenous vein graft disease, and neointimal hyperplasia. The Company’s disposable catheters use high-energy “cool” ultraviolet light to vaporize blockages into tiny particles that are easily absorbed into the blood stream, reducing complications and improving clinical outcomes. The Birmingham Heart Clinic Interventional Cardiologists performing this new procedure include Dr. Michael Simpson, Dr. Robert Foster, Dr. Brian Snoddy, and Dr. James Trimm.
